Toru Suzuki is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Leicester and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. He was educated and trained at the University of Tokyo in Japan where he was based before moving to the United Kingdom in September 2014. He is an academic cardiologist with a research focus on cardiovascular disease, with a particular research interest in biomarker development and precision medicine. Notable research achievements include development of the biomarkers of acute aortic dissection (e.g. smooth muscle markers such as myosin, creatine kinase-BB isozyme and calponin; TGFbeta; and D-dimer), and use of mass spectrometric analysis of proteins/peptides (e.g. B-type natriuretic peptide processing in heart disease) as well as metabolites (e.g. trimethylamine N-oxide as a link between the gut microbiome and acute heart disease).
