Dr. Pilar Fernandez-Calle is originally from Madrid, Spain. She earned her medical degree and completed her PhD in Medicine at the University Autonoma of Madrid. She followed her residency and granted her specialization in Laboratory Medicine at La Paz University Hospital where she is currently working as the Quality Director of Laboratory Department. Dr. Fernandez-Calle is also a technical advisor for the Spanish National Accreditation Body (ENAC). She pioneered the accreditation process of medical laboratories, being the Emergency laboratory of La Paz University Hospital the first accredited laboratory in Spain.

Dr. Fernandez-Calle is currently the president of the Analytical Quality Commission of the Spanish National Society of Laboratory Medicine (SEQCML). She is also member of various National and International Working Groups and Committees, such as Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI), collaborating to the development of two documents related to critical results and autoverification process. She is also a full member of the Working Group of Biological Variation of the European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM), and the Task Group of Biological Variation Database of the EFLM. She has been recently elected as member-at-large of the Executive Board of the EFLM. She has authored or co-authored more than 50 articles published in peer-reviewed journal and 1 book and 10 book chapters in laboratory books.  She is also Associate editor of Advances of Laboratory Medicine

Dr. Fernandez-Calle specializes in Biological Variation, Accreditation, POCT, Method Evaluation, Quality assurance, External Quality Assessment Programs and Total Testing Process Performance specifications.
